You can find hyaluronic acid in nearly every hydrating product on the shelf. But how do we know if it will work for us? 

Here's everything you need to know about it and how to tell if it's right for you.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a glycosaminoglycan (basically a long sugar chain) that your skin already makes on its own. It lives in the extracellular matrix in your skin and works as your body's built-in moisture reservoir.  Topically, HA acts as a humectant. This means it binds water and pulls it toward the skin. That's what gives you the plumper, smoother, more hydrated look people are after.  Most of the HA in skincare is made through bacterial fermentation. You'll typically find it in a formula at around 0.1–2%. It's pretty gentle and cooperates with almost every other ingredient. Why size matters Here's the catch: HA isn't just one "thing".  It actually comes in a wide range of molecular weights: anywhere from about 50 to 2,000+ kDa. The size changes what it does.  High-molecular-weight HA is too large to sink in so it sits on the surface like a soft, water-holding film that hydrates and calms.  Smaller molecules (around 20–300 kDa) can slip past the outer layer to hydrate the deeper levels. There's clinical evidence linking these low-weight versions a improved wrinkle depth, better elasticity, anti-inflammatory effects, and barrier repair.  So neither size is really "better"; they just do different jobs. This is exactly why the best HA serums blend a few sizes together so you get surface hydration and deeper support at the same time.  Who is it good for? Good news first: the research backs HA as one of the most broadly tolerated ingredients out there.  It suits pretty much every skin type and studies on low-molecular-weight HA show improvements in: Hydration Elasticity Wrinkle depth Barrier support (it's even been shown to boost filaggrin, a protein your skin barrier depends on).  So who might it not work for?  A small number of people do find HA irritating (though it's well tolerated by the vast majority). Part of the reason may come down to molecular weight: Smaller HA fragments can behave differently in the skin than larger ones. Keep in mind that a lot of reactions to HA serums may actually trace back to other ingredients in the formula rather than the HA itself.  It's worth patch testing a new HA product first if you have reactive skin.
