The banned ingredients
Asian, European, and Australian sunscreens have been using some cool UV filters for quite a while now. Here are a few advanced filters you won’t find in U.S. sunscreens:- Ethylhexyl Triazone is a UV-B filter known for its strong, photo-stable protection. It’s colorless, odorless, and easy to use in many formulations.
- Diethylhexyl Butamido Triazone is a highly water-resistant UV filter that protects against UV-B and UV-A rays. It remains ultra-photostable even at low concentrations.
- DHHB is a photostable chemical UV-A filter known for its strong stability in sunlight. It also plays quite nice with other ingredients.
- Tinosorb M is a photo-stable, broad-spectrum UV filter and absorber that protects skin by both blocking and converting UV rays.
Good news
But there's good news on the horizon!The FDA is currently reviewing Bemotrizinol, or Tinosorb S. It is a broad-spectrum UV filter that protects against both UV-A and UV-B rays. This ingredient been widely used in Europe, Australia, and Asia for over 20 years. It's one of the main reasons those sunscreens feel and perform so much better. Though international sunscreens have an edge right now, please don't let that stop you from using what's available. Any sunscreen is always better than no sunscreen.
